Researchers have discovered that fatal asthma attacks may originate from immune system activity well beyond the lungs. A study examining tissue samples from organ donors found that people who died during asthma attacks showed unusual immune patterns throughout their bodies, particularly in lymph nodes connected to the gut. The findings suggest that while asthma symptoms manifest in the airways, the underlying immune conditions may develop in distant locations.
Scientists at Columbia University analyzed samples from nearly 700 organ donors, comparing immune activity across multiple tissues in three groups: those who died during asthma attacks, asthma patients who died from other causes, and people without asthma. The fatal asthma group showed consistently elevated levels of immunoglobulin E, an antibody involved in allergic responses. Additionally, their lung-associated and gut-connected lymph nodes contained markedly different immune cell populations compared to control groups, including fewer regulatory cells that normally prevent excessive inflammation.
The researchers observed stronger connections between immune activity in the lungs and gut-associated lymph nodes among fatal asthma cases than in people without asthma. This pattern suggests that immune events preceding a life-threatening attack may not be confined to the respiratory system. However, the study establishes associations rather than definitive causes, and experts caution that the findings do not implicate specific foods or gut bacteria in triggering attacks.
The research opens new questions about asthma’s underlying mechanisms but does not yet yield new diagnostic tests or treatments. Further investigation is needed to understand the molecular pathways and cellular interactions involved in fatal asthma development.
