Jim Geoghan, the creative force behind the beloved Disney Channel series “Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” has passed away at age 79. His daughter Genevieve Geoghan confirmed his death on September 6 in Los Angeles to Variety. Geoghan’s groundbreaking work as co-creator and executive producer of the hit sitcom launched the careers of Cole and Dylan Sprouse, Ashley Tisdale, and Brenda Song, among others.
The original series, which aired from 2005 to 2008, followed mischievous twins navigating life in a hotel setting and earned Geoghan two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children’s Program. Its success led to a sequel, “Suite Life on Deck,” which ran for three additional seasons from 2008 to 2011, moving the characters to a cruise ship during their high school years. Before his work on the Disney franchise, Geoghan had established himself as a talented sitcom writer, contributing to classic television programs including “Silver Spoons,” “The Facts of Life,” and “The Van Dyke Show.”
Beyond television, Geoghan demonstrated considerable versatility as a playwright. His off-Broadway production “Only Kidding” achieved a remarkable 500-performance run, while “Light Sensitive” premiered at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater and subsequently received over 40 productions across the United States. Geoghan’s entertainment career began in 1973 when he co-founded the comedy trio Divided We Stand in New York, performing regularly at venues like the Improvisation Cafe and Catch A Rising Star before relocating to Los Angeles.
Outside of entertainment, Geoghan pursued creative hobbies including photography and model building. He is survived by his wife Annie, also an actor, and his daughter.
