The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the postponement of its upcoming production of “Othello,” which was set to feature Sharon D. Clarke in the title role. The decision comes as Clarke focuses on undergoing cancer treatment. The theatrical run, originally scheduled to begin in February 2027 and conclude in early April at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, has been delayed to allow the acclaimed performer the necessary time for her medical care.
Director Touko’s innovative staging of the classic Shakespeare tragedy was designed to explore themes of misogynoir through a contemporary lens. The creative team emphasized Clarke’s essential role in bringing this vision to life, leading leadership to determine that postponing the production was the most appropriate course of action. RSC co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey expressed their full support for Clarke, describing her as “a warrior” and stating they look forward to mounting the production when circumstances permit.
Clarke expressed gratitude for the institution’s backing, noting that the project will serve as motivation during her treatment journey. Patrons whose tickets are affected by the postponement will receive automatic refunds. The RSC indicated that information regarding alternative programming for the originally scheduled dates would be shared in the coming weeks.
