Two new films debuted at the box office this weekend, but neither managed to overtake the reigning champion. “The Dog Stars,” a 20th Century Studios post-apocalyptic action drama starring Jacob Elordi, underperformed significantly with just $3 million on Friday across 3,330 theaters. The film is currently tracking toward a $7.2 million weekend total and landed in fourth place.
“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action animated hybrid from Keylight Pictures, fared better among the newcomers, claiming second place with $5.2 million on Friday from 3,575 screens. The comedy reimagining of the classic cartoon is expected to earn approximately $13.5 million by Sunday. Directed by Dave Green and featuring Will Forte, Lana Condor, and John Cena, the film puts a comedic twist on the Road Runner universe by having Wile E. Coyote sue the gadget manufacturer for its defective products.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues its impressive box office run, securing the top spot for the fifth consecutive weekend with an estimated $21 million in earnings. The Sony-Marvel superhero film added $5.5 million on Friday and is approaching $890 million domestically. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” holds steady in third place with $14.6 million expected for the weekend, while “Insidious: Out of the Further” rounds out the top five with a projected $9.32 million.
