Rather than advocating for outright bans, the organization emphasizes the importance of scrutinizing new technologies, particularly those featuring game-like elements such as reward systems, visual effects, and avatar customization designed to boost student participation.
According to the APA’s findings, the total duration students spend on screens is far less important than what they actually do during that time. Simply observing a student’s apparent engagement or success with an educational program does not guarantee genuine learning or skill development. The report stresses that schools should measure effectiveness by testing whether students can successfully apply knowledge in real-world situations outside the digital environment. Technologies that fail this practical application test should be reconsidered.
The association expressed particular concern about artificial intelligence tools in educational settings. While AI can help students produce better written work, such improvements in output do not necessarily indicate that the student has developed stronger writing abilities. The APA recommends schools avoid technologies that encourage multitasking or depend heavily on student self-regulation, and advocates for increased investment in AI literacy programs for students, educators, and parents. Several major school systems, including those in New York City and Los Angeles, have already implemented restrictions on AI tools and reduced screen time for the upcoming academic year.
