YouTube’s European leadership is pushing back against criticism that the platform harms traditional British television. During a keynote address at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Pedro Pina, the company’s vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, argued that YouTube actually strengthens the sector by providing talent, reaching audiences and generating revenue. To support this position, he announced a four million dollar investment to be distributed over three years.
Pina rejected what he called the prevailing narrative of television’s decline, comparing it to a scripted tragedy where platforms play the villain. Instead, he drew parallels to historical industry disruptions, such as when photography emerged and ultimately enriched visual art, or when cable television spurred greater creative risk-taking. He suggested Britain stands at the threshold of another television renaissance, with YouTube as a significant contributor through its platform’s creative community and audience demand.
The funding commitment will support emerging talent and help experienced professionals develop new skills. YouTube plans to significantly expand its Creator Incubator partnership with the National Film and Television School, multiplying available spots tenfold. Pina highlighted YouTube’s existing contributions to the British economy, noting the platform supports over 45,000 full-time jobs and contributes approximately 2.9 billion dollars to GDP annually, while sharing advertising revenue with creators on a per-video basis.
Pina’s remarks arrive as European regulators reassess rules governing digital platforms and traditional media. The announcement emphasized YouTube’s revenue-sharing model and cited examples of creators who transitioned to mainstream television success through the platform.
