International sales company Parallax has secured worldwide distribution rights to filmmaker Anuparna Roy’s latest feature, “Lovers in the Blue Night,” ahead of its world premiere in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival. The acquisition marks another significant milestone for Roy, who made history last year as the first Indian director to claim the Horizons best director award for her debut film, “Songs of Forgotten Trees.”
Set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s vibrant nightlife, the drama follows four migrants navigating complex emotional terrain. The ensemble cast includes a married man concealing his true identity, his unfulfilled wife employed at a bar, a small-time criminal, and a sex worker. Their interconnected stories explore themes of hidden desires, unexpected romance, and the universal struggle for acceptance and belonging.
Parallax’s leadership expressed enthusiasm for Roy’s distinctive artistic approach. The company highlighted the film’s restrained yet powerful examination of human emotion, praising how it achieves impact through understated moments rather than melodramatic flourishes. The production team includes returning collaborators from Roy’s previous work alongside new international producers based in the United States and United Kingdom, reflecting the film’s expanding global scope.
The project features cinematography by Debjit Samanta, editing by Ketul Thakkar, and an original score composed by Nishant Ramtake, with Roy also contributing the screenplay.
