Toho and Gkids have unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at “Godzilla Minus Zero,” the highly anticipated sequel to director Yamazaki Takashi’s Oscar-winning “Godzilla Minus One.” The clip arrives ahead of the film’s North American theatrical debut scheduled for November 6. The movie will premiere globally at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26 as part of the Spotlight Gala program, with a Japanese release set for November 3.
The sequel continues the story two years after the original film, in 1949, as the Shikishima family faces a new crisis following Japan’s struggle to rebuild from previous devastation. Yamazaki returns to direct what producers describe as a more visually ambitious installment that maintains the grounded, character-focused approach of its predecessor while deepening the post-World War II narrative landscape.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” marks a significant technical achievement as the first Japanese production filmed for Imax using certified high-definition digital cameras with sound and imagery specifically optimized for the format. The entire film was shot in Japan, showcasing expanded special effects capabilities compared to the Academy Award-winning original.
Gkids, which Toho acquired in 2024, serves as the North American distributor and continues its role as curator of acclaimed international cinema. The company also handles Studio Ghibli’s theatrical releases in North America and maintains partnerships with renowned filmmakers including Shinkai Makoto and Hosoda Mamoru.
