While negative emotions like anxiety and anger did correlate with stronger urges, boredom emerged as the most predictive factor for both urges and actual pulling episodes. Tiredness also predicted stronger urges, suggesting that under-stimulation and low-energy states may drive the behavior as much as emotional distress. This discovery indicates that hair pulling may relate to regulating internal stimulation levels during periods of boredom or fatigue, rather than purely managing negative emotions.
Researchers acknowledge their study’s limitations, including its small, predominantly female sample and intensive monitoring requirements.
