The legendary 82-year-old recording artist Gladys Knight has announced plans to reduce her performance schedule, citing a desire to move into a new chapter of her career and personal life. In a social media post released Thursday evening, Knight stated she would be “easing into fewer performances” while prioritizing time with family members, including her husband and grandchildren.
The declaration follows concerning footage from recent concert appearances that sparked worry among her fanbase. Videos from a July performance at the Hollywood Bowl showed Knight displaying unusual behavior on stage, including wandering away from the microphone and not singing at appropriate moments. When backup singers attempted to guide her back into the performance, she reportedly declined their assistance.
According to her husband and manager William McDowell, Knight remains passionate about performing despite any underlying health difficulties. Previously, Knight’s son had voiced concerns about the demanding nature of her touring commitments during a 2025 multi-artist tour, though Knight denied allegations that she was being pressured to continue working.
Knight currently has six remaining concert dates scheduled through November 2026, with the next performance slated for Cincinnati on September 11. While the legendary “Midnight Train to Georgia” performer indicated she would continue seeing audiences, she framed the scheduling shift as part of her gradual transition rather than a complete retirement from music.
