Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has achieved a major milestone for Universal Pictures, becoming the studio’s highest-grossing film in its 114-year history. The Matt Damon-led production reached this distinction in less than two months of theatrical release, demonstrating exceptional audience demand for the ambitious project.
The film’s financial performance is staggering, accumulating $601.2 million domestically and $1.083 billion internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.68 billion. The achievement comes with numerous industry records, including the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made and the largest earner in IMAX history. Additionally, “The Odyssey” represents the first non-sequel film based on existing intellectual property to surpass $1 billion in international box office revenue since 2009.
Universal executives praised the accomplishment, with NBCUniversal Entertainment Chairman Donna Langley calling it “one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history.” The film’s success is particularly significant for the studio, which now commands 26 percent of the 2026 market share and has already crossed $5 billion in annual revenue, leading all competitors.
Beyond breaking Universal’s records, “The Odyssey” marks Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing “The Dark Knight Rises.” The production was shot globally and represents the director’s biggest opening weekend ever, reinforcing his status as one of cinema’s most commercially successful filmmakers.
