The supernatural sequel “Practical Magic 2” has claimed the top spot at the North American box office, ending a six-week reign by “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” The Warner Bros. dramedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, generated $13 million on its opening Friday across 4,146 screens and is projected to earn approximately $30 million through the weekend.
The film marks a significant turnaround for the franchise, which struggled during its original 1998 theatrical release. That earlier installment opened to modest numbers and earned $94 million globally against its $75 million budget. However, the movie subsequently developed a devoted fan following on home video. The new installment continues the story 25 years later, following the daughters of the original protagonist as they confront the family’s long-standing curse. The returning cast includes Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, joined by newcomers Maisie Williams and Joey King.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remains a formidable performer despite dropping to fourth place. The superhero film earned $2 million on Friday and is expected to accumulate $8.5 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to approximately $935 million. The blockbuster now stands on the brink of surpassing the all-time domestic record of $936.6 million, established by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Other new releases struggled to gain traction. Focus Features’ “The Uprising,” a historical drama directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Andrew Garfield, debuted in ninth place with just $1.38 million on Friday.
