The superhero film “Supergirl” is heading to HBO Max on September 10, bringing the DC Comics adaptation to streaming audiences. Directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, the movie draws inspiration from the comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” created by Tom King. The story follows Kara Zor-El as she partners with an unlikely ally on a galactic mission centered on vengeance and justice after a dangerous threat emerges.
Actress Milly Alcock, known for her role as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” takes on the lead role in this punk-rock interpretation of the iconic character. The film originally premiered in theaters on June 26, arriving as part of a broader DC Studios initiative overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran that began with “Superman” the previous year.
The theatrical release underperformed at the box office, generating between $100 million and $120 million in losses during its run. The film opened to $37.1 million domestically across 3,600 theaters and accumulated $62.6 million internationally, ultimately reaching $126 million worldwide. Critical reception proved equally disappointing, with the film receiving a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B-minus CinemaScore grade from audiences.
