Netflix has greenlit a new live-action adaptation of “Dungeons & Dragons” centered on the franchise’s “Ravenloft” setting, marking a significant expansion of the streaming platform’s fantasy content. The project is being developed in partnership with Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro-owned company behind the tabletop roleplaying game.
The series will be helmed by screenwriter John August and executive producer Alfonso Cuarón, with additional executive producers including Gabriel Marano, Richard Schwartz, and Gaby Rodriguez. The show promises to blend gothic horror with fantasy adventure, focusing on the character arc of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich and his transformation from tragic antihero to one of the franchise’s most formidable villains.
The greenlight for “Ravenloft” comes as Netflix simultaneously cancelled another “Dungeons & Dragons” project based on “The Forgotten Realms” setting. “Ravenloft,” originally created in 1983 by Tracy and Laura Hickman, has become one of the most popular environments within the “D&D” universe, spawning novels, video games, and rulebooks over the decades.
The property recently received renewed attention following the release of “Ravenloft: The Horrors Within,” an expanded reimagining of the original storyline, and appeared in the Wizards-produced actual-play series “Dungeon Masters” earlier this year.
