Taiwanese animation director Hsin Hsuan Yeh is developing an innovative virtual reality experience titled “The River Within You,” which examines themes of bereavement and acceptance through an immersive narrative. The project will be showcased at the 13th Venice Production Bridge’s Gap-Financing Market during September 4-6, marking a significant milestone in Yeh’s career following her acclaimed work on “Sense of Nowhere.”
The thirty-minute experience draws viewers into the perspective of a deceased grandmother whose soul encounters a butterfly guide leading toward an ocean of tears. When her living granddaughter’s tears fall upon her body, the grandmother becomes immersed in a dissolving landscape of shared memories, prompting her to revisit cherished moments before achieving peace. The narrative roots itself in Taiwanese folklore surrounding the belief that a living person’s tears prevent the deceased from finding rest.
Yeh conceived the project following her grandmother’s death from terminal cancer, grappling with how grief can overshadow a lifetime of happiness with final suffering. By recreating their joyful memories as interactive puzzles, she aims to recover the vibrant person grief had seemingly erased. The experience employs hand-tracking technology to transform touch into an emotional tool, while photogrammetry-scanned clay models combined with CGI preserve tactile warmth throughout the visuals.
Producer Hsia Hsien Chao emphasizes the project’s universal resonance despite its cultural specificity, noting that the emotional core of loss and letting go transcends geographical boundaries. The immersive format allows audiences to actively participate in the grandmother’s journey toward acceptance.
