Bitters End has secured distribution agreements for “In My Father’s Room” across multiple Asian and European markets ahead of the film’s competitive debut at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The drama has been picked up by Art House Films for France, Jinjin Pictures for Korea, Sky Digi Entertainment for Taiwan, and Edko Films for Hong Kong, with additional territories currently under discussion. Following its San Sebastian premiere, the production will continue to the Busan International Film Festival.
The feature marks the directorial debut of acclaimed novelist Maha Harada, who adapted the screenplay from her own short story “An Unnecessary Man.” The ensemble cast features Aoi Yu, Ogata Issey, Nagayama Eita, and Watanabe Eri, with cinematography by Kitagawa Yoshio. The narrative centers on Satomi, a museum employee who discovers a mysterious key belonging to her recently deceased father, prompting her to explore the hidden life he led in his final days.
Art House Films’ president Eric Le Bot praised the film’s artistic merits, highlighting its distinctive visual composition and thematic exploration of how art provides meaning to everyday existence. Bitters End will handle the movie’s domestic Japanese release, scheduled for January 2027. The production showcases an introspective examination of familial connection and the overlooked beauty found in quiet, solitary lives.
