Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning that Moscow will seize European commercial vessels if European nations proceed with confiscating ships carrying Russian cargo. The threat was made Wednesday while Putin observed naval exercises near Sakhalin Island in Russia’s Far East. He stated that Russia would conduct reciprocal seizures “wherever we deem it necessary and appropriate,” according to Russian news outlets TASS and RIA Novosti.
Putin’s statement responds to recent European Union sanctions that permit member states to intercept vessels suspected of participating in Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which transports Russian oil in violation of existing sanctions. The EU sanctions also authorize the sale of any cargo recovered from these seized ships. Putin characterized these European actions as “piracy and robbery,” claiming they represent an attempt to restrict Russian commercial shipping and confiscate Russian property.
The Russian leader indicated that the Ministry of Defence and Pacific Fleet have already received directives regarding potential countermeasures. Additionally, Putin criticized NATO’s expanding military presence in the Asia Pacific region, alleging the alliance is deploying weapons systems threatening to Russia and forming new military partnerships in the area. His comments coincide with heightened regional tensions, including accusations that North Korea and Russia are deepening their military cooperation amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
