Recent research suggests that the mind-body connection may influence immune function more directly than previously understood. Scientists have discovered that consciously directing attention toward inflammatory sensations could help regulate the body’s immune response, while deliberately ignoring these signals appears to have the opposite effect.
Researchers led by neuroscientist Liron Rozenkrantz at Bar-Ilan University conducted experiments using standard allergy skin tests to measure inflammatory reactions. Participants underwent histamine prick tests under two different conditions: in one session they focused attention on the resulting irritation, while in another they distracted themselves with videos. The results were striking. When participants concentrated on the inflammatory sensation, the resulting swelling measured approximately 3.5 millimeters compared to 5.0 millimeters during distraction. Similarly, the surrounding redness was noticeably smaller in the focus condition.
The research team replicated these findings in a second experiment using visual shapes as attention cues, confirming that roughly 90 percent of participants showed significantly larger inflammatory responses when distracted. The inflammatory reactions were about 1.5 to 1.6 times larger during distraction conditions. Interestingly, when participants focused on the sensation, their swelling began settling sooner, with nearly 90 percent showing stable or shrinking responses after 20 minutes.
The findings, published in Nature Human Behaviour, establish a causal relationship between voluntary attention and immune regulation. While the discomfort felt more intense when focusing on the inflammation, the actual physical immune response was better controlled, suggesting the brain uses attentional signals to fine-tune immune reactions with greater precision.
