NBC is launching an ambitious cross-country promotional campaign ahead of its 2026 NFL Kickoff Game, which will air on Wednesday, September 9th. The network’s “Race to Wednesday” initiative marks only the second time in NBC Sports’ football broadcasting history that the season opener will take place on a weekday rather than the traditional Thursday or Sunday slot.
Beginning Tuesday, a custom NFL football will travel from Boston to Seattle, making appearances in multiple NFL cities and fan communities throughout the week. The journey will feature on-air talent from NBC, Bravo, and Peacock, along with celebrity guests, content creators, and team mascots who will document the football’s progress on social media platforms. Maria Taylor of “Football Night in America” will play a key role in announcing the scheduling change to audiences.
The 2026 matchup will feature the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks hosting the New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl LX. NBC will broadcast the opening game for its 21st consecutive season, with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET on NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo, followed by kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET. Fans can track the promotional football’s cross-country journey daily across NBC Sports’ official social media channels throughout the week.
