Chile’s Santiago Film Festival is marking the seventh anniversary of its Sanfic-Morbido Lab with two significant expansions to its genre-focused programming. The festival, scheduled for November 2-6, will debut a new partnership called WomanInFan Southern Cone alongside an additional project-support initiative known as Fantastic WIP. These additions represent a continued evolution of the lab, which has become a key platform for fantasy and genre filmmaking development across Latin America.
The WomanInFan Southern Cone program, developed in collaboration with Spain’s Sitges Film Festival, specifically targets female directors from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Participants selected for the initiative will receive mentoring and the opportunity to pitch their projects to industry professionals during the festival. This regional extension builds on the broader WomanInFan LatAm program that was introduced earlier this year at the Costa Rica Media Market.
Fantastic WIP addresses a gap in the production pipeline by supporting projects that have entered post-production but lack adequate resources to complete their journey to market. Selected filmmakers will present their work-in-progress to international sales agents, distributors, and festival programmers for feedback and potential distribution deals. Winners of the lab’s awards, including the Premio Mórbido and Premio Fantastic Pavilion, receive co-financing and guaranteed placement at the Fantastic Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival.
