Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for “La Bola Negra” (“The Black Ball”), a Spanish-language film directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. The narrative spans three distinct time periods—1932, 1937, and 2017—as it follows the interconnected stories of three gay men. The project draws inspiration from an incomplete work by renowned Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, as well as Alberto Conejero’s theatrical piece “La Piedra Oscura” (“The Dark Stone”), with Conejero co-writing the screenplay alongside the directorial duo known collectively as Los Javis.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente making his acting debut, alongside established performers Carlos González, Miguel Bernardeau, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close. The production includes an original song titled “La Nieve,” written and performed by Guitarricadelafuente, with a score composed by Raül Refree. At its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the film earned the prestigious Best Director Award for Calvo and Ambrossi.
Netflix secured U.S. distribution rights following the Cannes premiere and has scheduled an extended theatrical window beginning October 16, with a streaming release set for December 2. This distribution strategy marks the longest theatrical window ever granted to a Netflix film, surpassing the previous record held by the 2019 drama “Marriage Story.” The film will debut theatrically in Spain on September 25.
