Researchers from Spain’s Autonomous University of Barcelona interviewed 15 science journalists working across Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, finding that many have successfully documented instances of fraud, malpractice, and corporate influence in academia. Their investigations have prompted regulatory changes, public acknowledgment of wrongdoing, and increased institutional transparency.
Despite these successes, the journalists face substantial obstacles in pursuing watchdog coverage. Financial constraints, limited newsroom time, political pressure, and even censorship threaten their ability to sustain investigative work. Additionally, these professionals grapple with a complex dilemma: while exposing scientific misconduct is essential for maintaining research integrity, such exposures risk undermining public trust in science itself and potentially strengthening anti-science narratives.
To address these challenges, the researchers recommend expanding funding sources for investigative science journalism, providing journalists with specialized training in scientific methodology, and allowing reporters adequate time for in-depth investigations. They also call for greater transparency in scientific data and increased accountability across research institutions and government bodies.
