Shapiro had criticized Offerman’s portrayal of a gay character in the episode “Long, Long Time,” which focused on a romantic relationship between two men over several decades. Offerman dismissed Shapiro’s analysis, stating he found numerous factual errors in the recap and accused the commentator of displaying “rampant homophobia.”
The episode drew widespread critical acclaim despite facing backlash from online detractors objecting to its LGBTQ+ storyline. Offerman’s performance earned him an Emmy and an Independent Spirit Award. During his acceptance speech at the latter ceremony, he addressed the controversy directly, defending the episode as a love story rather than political content and criticizing those who took issue with its themes.
