While robotic vacuum cleaners have already become commonplace, developers are now creating humanoid machines capable of handling more sophisticated household responsibilities, such as organizing clothes and managing kitchen appliances.
Several companies are racing to bring these machines to market. Tau Robotics, based in San Francisco, recently launched a pilot initiative allowing residents in 1,000 homes to hire humanoid robots for basic cleaning tasks at $30 per hour. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturer UniX AI has introduced Panther, a wheeled humanoid capable of preparing meals and managing bathroom cleaning. Additionally, 1X’s Neo Gamma robot, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, can fold garments and answer doors, with prices starting around $20,000.
However, potential buyers should approach with caution. Many supposedly independent robots still rely on remote human operators to navigate challenging situations, meaning your mechanical helper might come with an invisible companion controlling its movements. Furthermore, these devices often perform most impressively in carefully produced marketing videos shot in pristine settings rather than real-world homes filled with clutter and unexpected obstacles.
As household robotics technology advances, consumers must weigh the convenience these machines promise against their current limitations and reliability concerns.
