Miyu Distribution, a leading independent animation studio, has secured worldwide distribution rights to “Ana, en Passant,” a new animated feature from director Fernanda Salgado. The film, a collaboration between production companies from Brazil, Portugal, and France, will debut globally at the Brasília Brazilian Film Festival before its international premiere at the Vancouver Film Festival, where it will make groundbreaking history as the first animated work selected for the festival’s competitive Vanguard program.
The film features acclaimed Brazilian actress Zezé Motta, who achieved international recognition in the 1977 film “Xica” and has since become one of Brazil’s most respected performers. She shares the screen with emerging talent Carlos Francisco and Jéssica Pierina, who plays dual roles in the production. The narrative follows a young Black French woman named Ana who travels to her grandmother’s hometown of Belo Horizonte following her death, where she encounters her mysterious double Alice. Together, the characters navigate the city while exploring themes of grief, identity and family heritage.
Salgado’s directorial debut employs a distinctive visual approach, combining rotoscope animation, hand-drawn sequences, collage work and stop-motion techniques to create a layered exploration of memory and transformation. The project will receive theatrical distribution in Brazil on November 5. Miyu Distribution’s leadership praised the film’s ambitious storytelling and its seamless integration of visual aesthetics with narrative, emphasizing their commitment to bringing the work to international audiences.
