FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed his intention to pursue re-election despite mounting pressure from multiple continental federations calling for his resignation. The organization released a statement asserting that the incumbent’s candidacy remains unchanged since his initial announcement in April, with the presidential election scheduled for March 2027.
Infantino faces significant opposition following his controversial proposal to sell stakes in FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors. The plan collapsed after resistance from numerous member associations and key officials. UEFA has been particularly vocal in demanding his removal and has pledged to collaborate with other confederations to identify alternative candidates for the upcoming congress vote.
The FIFA president made a rare public appearance at the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland, where he attended the opening match between the host nation and Argentina. When questioned about his future and potential resignation, Infantino declined to comment, stating that discussions would occur at an appropriate time and venue rather than during the tournament.
European nations, which represent a quarter of the tournament’s participating teams, previously threatened to boycott FIFA events in response to the sell-off scheme. However, they withdrew this threat following assurances from FIFA that the controversial proposal would not be revived, allowing the competition to proceed as scheduled.
