Grammy-winning artist FKA Twigs has commenced filming for a biographical feature about legendary performer and activist Josephine Baker. The production launched in France and is scheduled to continue through mid-November, with additional scenes being shot in Sofia, Bulgaria. The project is being produced by Studiocanal and Bien ou Bien Productions, with theatrical distribution planned across multiple territories including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia.
Acclaimed filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, known for her award-winning works “Cuties” and “Hawa,” directs and co-writes the film alongside Olivier Lorelle. The ensemble cast includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giuseppe Maggio, Benjamin Millepied, and other established actors. The production has received approval from Baker’s family members, including her sons Jean-Claude and Brian Bouillon Baker.
The film chronicles Baker’s journey from her early years amid American racial segregation through her rise as a celebrated performer in 1920s Paris, her involvement with the French Resistance during World War II, and her return to the United States in 1951. FKA Twigs, who brings experience as a singer, dancer, and visual artist to the role, has previously appeared in films including “Honey Boy,” “The Crow,” and the A24 feature “Mother Mary.”
