Scientists are increasingly investigating whether Alzheimer’s disease could potentially be transmitted through blood transfusions. While the condition has traditionally been understood as a sporadic ailment influenced by age, genetics, and lifestyle choices, emerging research suggests infection may play a role in disease development. Researchers have begun examining whether harmful amyloid-beta proteins associated with Alzheimer’s could be transferred via blood transfusions, similar to how pathogens spread.
Recent studies have provided compelling clues about this possibility. A landmark 2023 population study from Scandinavian countries discovered that recipients of blood from donors who later experienced brain hemorrhages showed increased risk of similar bleeding events years afterward. Since brain bleeding relates to cerebral amyloid angiopathy, a condition linked to amyloid-beta proteins, researchers suggest early amyloid-beta seeds may have been present in the donated blood. Additional findings from prior years indicated that contaminated surgical instruments might transmit these harmful proteins between patients.
Despite these concerning findings, experts emphasize that current risks remain largely theoretical and should not undermine confidence in blood transfusions, which save countless lives annually. Scientists advocate for additional large-scale studies to better understand transmission risks, enhanced monitoring of high-risk patients, and new screening methods to identify potential carriers of amyloid-beta pathology. Researchers point to historical medical failures as cautionary reminders about the importance of proactive safety measures rather than waiting for absolute certainty.
