Following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia’s Chocó region, Beyoncé has pledged $1 million in relief funding. According to an announcement from Parkwood Entertainment, the contribution will be directed toward supplying food and housing to residents in the areas most severely impacted by the disaster that struck on August 10.
The earthquake claimed at least 312 lives and destroyed approximately 29,000 homes, according to government figures cited by the Associated Press. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that roughly 69,000 residents—representing about 10 percent of Chocó’s population—were affected or displaced by the natural disaster.
Beyoncé’s donation joins other significant relief efforts already underway. Singer Shakira recently committed $1.25 million through her Barefoot Foundation to rebuild schools and a university, partnering with Live Nation, the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, and CAF. Those funds aim to repair educational infrastructure and return students to classrooms.
The entertainment industry has directed donors to additional resources, including the websites for Food for the Poor and World Central Kitchen, both organizations actively involved in providing humanitarian assistance to affected communities in the region.
