Director Luca Guadagnino’s biographical film Artificial has unveiled its first teaser, featuring Andrew Garfield portraying OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The footage carries a distinctly ominous tone as it chronicles pivotal moments in the tech executive’s career, including his controversial departure and subsequent return to the company in 2023.
The film explores the founding of OpenAI and the development of ChatGPT, with supporting performances from Yura Borisov as co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, who also helped establish the organization. In the teaser, Garfield’s character ominously references the transformative—and potentially disruptive—nature of their work, suggesting the narrative will grapple with the broader implications of artificial intelligence technology.
The project experienced production challenges before securing theatrical distribution. Amazon MGM originally committed to releasing the film but withdrew in June, months after establishing a partnership with OpenAI. Independent distributor Neon subsequently acquired rights to the film, which will premiere at the New York Film Festival before its December 25 theatrical release. The ensemble cast additionally includes Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd, and Mark Rylance.
Artificial joins a wave of high-profile productions examining influential technology leaders, alongside documentaries and films focusing on other prominent industry figures scheduled for fall release.
