Tensions in Yemen have intensified as government forces reported successfully defending military positions against a Houthi offensive. According to military officials affiliated with government forces, troops from the 4th Infantry Hashd Brigade repelled an attack on the al-Mafalis front in Taiz province’s southeastern region. The military leadership claimed significant casualties were inflicted on Houthi fighters during the engagement.
The escalation marks a sharp uptick in hostilities following announcements from the Yemeni government on Wednesday that it had launched coordinated strikes against Houthi targets. These operations included artillery bombardment and drone attacks across multiple provinces, with state media reporting deaths and injuries among Houthi personnel. Government air defense systems also engaged what officials identified as reconnaissance drones operated by the rebel group in southwestern coastal areas.
Leadership from Yemen’s Presidential Council signaled a hardened stance, declaring that future Houthi military actions would face decisive responses. Officials stated they have abandoned attempts at ceasefire agreements that have failed previously, instead calling for sustainable peace through state control of weapons and authority. The remarks came as intermittent clashes that resumed in early July continued to claim lives on both sides, following a period of relative calm since April 2022.
