Verve Ventures has acquired North American distribution rights to Jerome Sable’s black comedy “Wolf of the North,” positioning the film for its premiere at Frontières at TIFF: The Market. The project will debut alongside six other films in the genre showcase, a collaboration between the Fantasia International Film Festival and the inaugural TIFF: The Market on September 12.
The film follows an aspiring wildlife filmmaker portrayed by Canadian actor and comedian Pat Thornton as he attempts to complete his late father’s final project. Thirty years prior, the father was killed by Arctic wolves while documenting them. Sable and Thornton co-wrote the mockumentary-style script after developing the lead character together, drawing creative influence from acclaimed filmmaker collaborations. Verve Ventures head Amy Beecroft praised the project’s distinctive comedic voice and immediately recognizable premise, calling it “funny, strange, deeply Canadian and surprisingly universal.”
Raven Banner Entertainment secured Canadian distribution for the title, with producer Javiera Quintana noting that TIFF: The Market offers an opportunity to connect with international financiers and distributors. The production received funding from Ontario Creates and Telefilm Canada, with principal photography scheduled to commence in January 2028. The film represents the first fictional feature from 90th Parallel Productions, a documentary-focused Toronto company.
