NVIDIA’s latest graphics technology, DLSS 5, launches September 3 exclusively on RTX 50-series graphics cards, beginning with NBA 2K27. The technology uses artificial intelligence to enhance game visuals in real-time by adjusting lighting, textures, and character features on the fly. While supporters view it as a major advancement comparable to ray tracing’s introduction in 2018, the feature has become controversial within the gaming community since its initial reveal.
The core debate centers on whether AI should be permitted to alter a game’s artistic vision without explicit developer direction. Proponents argue the technology delivers genuine improvements in performance and visual quality, particularly in sports and photorealistic games, and claim poorly received examples result from improper configuration rather than flawed technology.
