Autonomous vehicle company Waymo announced on Tuesday that it will begin operating driverless taxi services in three new cities: Denver, Colorado, San Diego, California, and Tampa, Florida. This marks the first time Waymo will operate in Colorado, expanding its presence to a total of 14 cities across the United States.
The rollout will occur gradually, starting with dozens of vehicles in each location before scaling up to hundreds of vehicles over time. The expansion is significant as it will represent approximately 150 additional square miles of service territory for the company’s robotaxi network.
Notably, Denver and San Diego riders will have access to Waymo’s newest vehicle model, the Ojai—an electric van-style robotaxi developed in partnership with Chinese manufacturer Zeekr. The Ojai was specifically designed as a robotaxi from inception, featuring a spacious interior with sliding doors and dual LED display screens for passenger use. This expansion will also mark the first large-scale deployment of Waymo’s 6th generation autonomous driving system.
