Users began sharing tutorials for transferring their stories to Archive of Our Own, a nonprofit fanfiction repository operated by the Organization for Transformative Works. Unlike Wattpad, AO3 operates without advertising or algorithmic feeds and prioritizes maximum inclusiveness through comprehensive content labeling rather than removal policies.
The situation highlighted fanfiction’s growing prominence in digital culture. Archive of Our Own recently surpassed 18 million fanworks, while celebrity enthusiasm for the genre has increased public visibility. The scare underscored how quickly misinformation spreads within fan communities and the strong attachment users maintain to platforms where they create and share stories.
