Venus Williams’s struggles on the tennis court continued at the Cincinnati Open, where the legendary competitor fell to Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango in straight sets. The first-round matchup ended 6-2, 6-2, extending Williams’s winless streak to 13 consecutive singles matches. The 46-year-old, who earned a wild-card invitation to the WTA 1000 event, has not tasted victory since July 2025.
Arango, ranked 95th and just 25 years old, dominated the contest from the outset. The Colombian player broke Williams’s serve in the opening game and maintained her momentum throughout the hour-and-five-minute affair. Arango converted four of five break-point opportunities and won 71 percent of her first-serve points, while Williams managed only 41 percent efficiency on her first serve and squandered her single break-point chance.
Despite the disappointing result, Williams acknowledged some positive aspects of her performance. She noted that she was controlling points during the match but struggled with consistency in closing them out. The tennis icon, making her 11th Cincinnati appearance, will remain in the tournament to compete in doubles alongside her sister Serena, as the pair received a wild-card entry for that competition.
