Filip Hrgovic of Croatia made history by becoming the first boxer from his nation to win a world heavyweight championship. The 34-year-old defeated Britain’s Moses Itauma in the ninth round at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday to claim the vacant International Boxing Federation title.
The fight proved dramatic, with Itauma, aged just 21, dominating the early rounds and earning standing ovations from the crowd. However, the inexperienced challenger gradually tired against Hrgovic’s relentless pace. Referee Howard Foster stopped the contest in the ninth round as Itauma appeared unable to continue, prompting the fighter’s trainer to throw in the towel. Itauma was subsequently carried from the ring on a stretcher and transported to hospital.
Hrgovic claimed the title previously held by Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk. The Croatian now sets his sights on unifying titles, expressing interest in facing WBO champion Daniel Dubois and WBC title holder Agit Kabayel, both of whom attended the bout ringside. Promoter Frank Warren indicated a potential next opponent in Cuban Frank Sanchez, though Hrgovic prioritizes these championship unification fights instead.
