Tim Curry, the British actor whose distinctive voice and theatrical presence made him an icon across film, television, and stage, passed away Tuesday evening at age 80. Curry became a cultural phenomenon through his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role that launched him to cult status when the 1975 film became a midnight-movie sensation despite its initial commercial disappointment.
Beyond his most famous role, Curry demonstrated remarkable versatility throughout his career. He brought menace to Stephen King’s adaptation It as the terrifying clown Pennywise, charmed audiences as the butler Wadsworth in Clue, and embodied darkness in Legend. His commanding baritone and English accent also lent themselves to voice acting work, including animated projects like FernGully and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Born in England in 1946, Curry initially pursued both acting and music before his theatrical breakthrough in the musical Hair.
