UNLV secured a 21-6 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night in Honolulu, with strong performances from running backs Jai’den Thomas and Jackson Arnold carrying the Rebels to victory. Thomas accumulated 143 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Arnold contributed 89 rushing yards and two scores, along with 116 passing yards. The win marks UNLV’s fourth consecutive Island Showdown trophy triumph in the teams’ ongoing rivalry.
The Rebels dominated the first half, with Arnold scoring on rushing plays of 2 and 7 yards to establish a 14-3 halftime lead. UNLV’s defense proved particularly effective throughout the contest, preventing Hawaii from reaching the end zone entirely. The Rebels outgained their opponents 364-294 in total yardage and improved to 1-1 on the season, while Hawaii fell to 0-2.
Hawaii mounted a second-half comeback attempt, outgaining UNLV 185-147 in yards during the final two quarters. However, the Rainbow Warriors could only add a field goal to their score. Thomas put the game out of reach with a 50-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to two scores. Hawaii’s final drive ended with an interception, allowing UNLV to run out the clock for their first victory of the year.
The two programs will continue their rivalry next Saturday, with UNLV traveling to face North Texas while Hawaii hosts New Mexico State at home.
