Rae Benjamin, a co-producer on “The Witcher” Season 5 and cowriter of the animated film “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep,” has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Starz #TakeTheLead Award. The honor will be presented at the Humanitas Prizes ceremony next month by screenwriter and producer Russell T Davies, known for his work on “Doctor Who” and the upcoming Starz series “Tip Toe.” The award recognizes mid-career writers who demonstrate exceptional skill in amplifying narratives centered on women and underrepresented communities.
Benjamin will receive a $10,000 cash award along with executive mentorship from Starz as part of the recognition. According to Starz original programming head Kathryn Busby, Benjamin was selected for her distinctive creative voice and bold storytelling approach. Busby also highlighted Benjamin’s work with In The Cut, her organization dedicated to supporting emerging writers, which aligns with the award’s mission to elevate underrepresented storytellers.
Benjamin expressed her commitment to expanding representation for marginalized communities through her writing and mentoring work. She plans to direct the prize money toward a short film addressing Black maternal health. The Humanitas organization also announced other 2026-27 honors, including five New Voices Fellows and two College Screenwriting Awards winners, each receiving mentorship and financial support to advance their careers in television and film.
