Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko commented Thursday on the timing and implications of new eligibility rules adopted by the Southeastern Conference this week. The SEC announced a policy barring athletes who have signed professional contracts or been listed on NFL, NBA, or WNBA rosters from competing for conference schools. Elko characterized the situation as emblematic of ongoing uncertainty in college athletics, noting that teams face games without complete clarity on roster composition rules.
The SEC’s decision followed attempts by LSU and other programs to recruit recently released professional players. Tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who had spent time with NFL teams, was poised to join LSU, as was former Ole Miss player Zxavian Harris. Additionally, a court had temporarily allowed basketball player RJ Luis Jr., who had signed with NBA teams, to play for LSU. These developments prompted the conference to establish definitive guidelines prohibiting such transitions.
Elko stated that Texas A&M remained aware of available talent but ultimately chose to proceed with its existing roster. The program enters the season ranked eighth nationally, featuring multiple high-impact transfers including former players from LSU, Tennessee, Miami, Alabama, and Northwestern. Wide receiver Isaiah Horton, acquired from Alabama, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and focus heading into the season.
The Aggies open their campaign September 5 against Missouri State, with the Big Ten having adopted similar eligibility restrictions to the SEC’s new policy.
