Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton delivered a pointed remark during Friday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, taking aim at the home crowd attendance. With his team leading 24-0 at halftime, Payton quipped that many of the empty seats in Mercedes-Benz Stadium appeared to be occupied by people in disguise.
The Falcons’ home crowd responded to the lopsided performance by booing their team as players headed to the locker room. Denver’s dominant first-half display included 17 points in the second quarter alone. Defensive back Jahdae Barron added to Atlanta’s misery with a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Payton’s jab carried particular significance given his history with the franchise. During his 15 seasons as New Orleans Saints head coach, he compiled a 21-9 record against Atlanta, establishing himself as a familiar thorn in the Falcons’ side.
For Atlanta, the preseason opener represented a disappointing start following offseason changes. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made his Falcons debut but struggled early before backup Cooper Rush took over. The contest concluded with Denver winning 27-7, leaving Atlanta’s fanbase with little to celebrate and Payton with the last laugh.
