Atalanta have initiated negotiations to acquire Samuel Mbangula from Werder Bremen, according to reports from Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio. The Serie A side is pursuing the Belgian winger as the transfer window enters its final stages, with the deadline set for September 1. Mbangula currently plays in Germany’s Bundesliga after departing Juventus last summer.
The 22-year-old’s path to the German club began at Juventus, where he developed through the club’s youth ranks before earning senior team opportunities during the 2024-25 season under manager Thiago Motta. During that campaign, Mbangula contributed four goals and five assists across 32 appearances in all competitions. Juventus subsequently sold him to Werder Bremen for €10 million, with an additional €2 million available in performance-related bonuses.
Mbangula’s recent performance in the Bundesliga has been noteworthy, registering three goals and four assists from 26 league appearances, including twelve starts. His previous experience includes stints at Belgian sides Club Brugge and Anderlecht before his teenage move to Italy in 2020. Atalanta’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, who previously held the same position at Juventus, is expected to lead the negotiations for the talented winger.
The pursuit of Mbangula represents one of several attacking options Atalanta is exploring. Simultaneously, the club is engaged in separate talks with Bologna regarding English winger Jonathan Rowe, with reports suggesting Atalanta has tabled an offer of approximately €40 million including potential bonuses for that deal.
