Apple’s recent announcement of the iPhone Duo foldable device appears to have prompted Samsung to reconsider its product timeline. According to reports from 9to5Google citing industry leaker Lanzuk, Samsung is considering accelerating the release of a Galaxy Z TriFold successor, along with a separate slideable phone model that was originally scheduled for 2027.
The competitive pressure makes strategic sense given the original Galaxy Z TriFold’s challenging market performance. Samsung’s first tri-fold device launched at approximately $2,500 in South Korea with reported losses on each unit sold. When it arrived in the U.S. in January 2026 priced around $2,900, the phone quickly sold out but was removed from Samsung’s online store just three months later, indicating limited mainstream appeal.
The upcoming Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is rumored to address the original model’s shortcomings through improved design and durability while maintaining similar pricing. Achieving this would represent a significant manufacturing accomplishment, particularly given that the first generation allegedly operated at a financial loss.
However, Samsung’s actual timeline remains uncertain, and both devices may still launch according to their original 2027 schedule. The iPhone Duo is set to launch on October 23, and the full extent of Samsung’s response should become clearer as 2027 approaches.
