A new spinoff series centered on character Frances Neagley has highlighted a critical weakness in expanding the “Reacher” franchise. The original Amazon Prime Video show succeeds largely due to its lead character and star Alan Ritchson’s commanding presence, which carries viewers through action-packed episodes featuring inventive fight sequences across America. Without that central anchor, the spinoff struggles to maintain audience engagement.
The eight-episode “Neagley” series follows Ritchson’s character’s ex-military colleague, now working as a private investigator in Chicago. Initial episodes featuring both characters together prove more entertaining, but once Reacher departs to continue his own adventures, the show falters under the weight of its new lead. While actress Maria Sten performs adequately in action sequences, her character lacks the charisma necessary to carry an entire series independently.
The investigation driving the plot—involving the mysterious death of Neagley’s childhood friend—fails to generate compelling intrigue. Despite incorporating various plot elements including cults and pharmaceutical schemes, the narrative feels disjointed and poorly executed. Additional backstory elements meant to deepen character development, including Neagley’s family relationships and a reluctant police detective partner, add little emotional resonance to the proceedings.
The spinoff demonstrates that formulaic action entertainment requires strong character magnetism to succeed, something the original series possessed but this extension does not.
