Researchers have discovered a surprising connection between the microorganisms inhabiting our bodies and psychopathic personality traits, according to a new study published in Translational Psychiatry. Scientists analyzed bacterial compositions in blood, saliva, and fecal samples from 200 healthy adults alongside their responses to a psychopathy assessment questionnaire. While individual microbial diversity showed no clear patterns, comparative analysis revealed that higher levels of three specific bacterial types correlated with stronger psychopathic characteristics.
The bacteria in question—Allisonella and Prevotella from the gut, and Cloacibacillus evryensis—demonstrated positive associations with psychopathic traits including callousness, manipulation, and impulsivity. Conversely, higher levels of Treponema vincentii in the oral microbiome were linked to lower psychopathy markers. Researchers theorize that these microbes may influence behavior through various mechanisms, including inflammation responses and neurotransmitter production that affect impulse control and emotional processing.
The findings represent the first evidence suggesting that gut and oral microbiota may contribute to psychopathic tendencies, a personality construct characterized by lack of empathy and antisocial behavior. However, the researchers emphasize that their results show correlation, not causation. Scientists believe these microbes could eventually serve as biological markers for identifying psychopathic traits, potentially supplementing existing neurobiological models that have focused primarily on brain structure differences.
