Louisville men’s basketball coach Pat Kelsey experienced a memorable evening Friday at Louisville Slugger Field during a minor league baseball game. The Cardinals head coach was honored with commemorative bobbleheads distributed to fans as they arrived at the venue for the Louisville Bats’ matchup against the Gwinnett Stripers.
Before taking the mound for the first pitch, Kelsey participated in a lighthearted warm-up session with Bats third base coach Vince Harrison. Harrison, a former Kentucky football and baseball player, playfully wore a rival school’s apparel during their catch, reminding Kelsey of his historic touchdown achievement at Louisville’s stadium. Kelsey was a good sport about the exchange, embracing the humorous moment.
Kelsey successfully delivered his first pitch across home plate without incident, later joking about avoiding an embarrassing error. As a lifelong Cincinnati Reds supporter, he also had the opportunity to meet former Reds center fielder Eric Davis, an encounter he found particularly special and memorable.
Following his ceremonial duties on the field, Kelsey made his way to the broadcast booth to provide baseball commentary on radio while enjoying the game conditions and watching the Bats compete on what he described as an ideal evening for the sport.
