Two accomplished Chilean television professionals are spearheading a new Miami-based media venture aimed at bringing Latin American stories to international audiences. Francisca Alegría and Fernanda Urrejola, known for their work as co-showrunners on Amazon Prime Video’s “The House of the Spirits,” are leading the creative slate for Alma Media Lab, a startup company focused on adapting literature for screen productions.
Alma Media Lab follows a publishing-to-screen model similar to established companies like Hello Sunshine and Alloy Entertainment. The company simultaneously develops books and television series in collaboration with authors, with a primary focus on content for U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets. According to co-founder Coca Gómez, the company’s approach emphasizes strategic storytelling, allowing creators to maintain creative control and intellectual property rights while developing fully realized projects.
Since launching earlier this year, Alma Media Lab has secured partnerships with several prominent Latin American writers. These include acclaimed novelist Carla Guelfenbein, whose Alfaguara Prize-winning work “In the Distance With You” is being adapted, along with her novel “The Nature of Desire.” The company also holds rights to a memoir by Colombian jurist and legal scholar Federico Arellano, whose decades-long investigation into the bombing of Avianca Flight 203 will be developed as both a book and television series.
Alegría emphasized the venture’s commitment to producing narratives that authentically represent Latin American culture while achieving global appeal, stating that such stories should transcend borders and reshape international perceptions of the region’s creative output.
