Chilean filmmaker Patricio Valladares is set to direct a horror reimagining of Dante’s classic work “Inferno,” titled “The Divine Comedy.” The project marks Valladares’ latest venture following his 2023 found-footage horror film “Invoking Yell.” Production is scheduled to begin in Rome this September, with Italian production company Anxur Films leading the effort alongside Ireland-based Skincrawl Studios, which will manage international distribution.
The film adaptation takes creative liberties with the source material, following Dante as a grieving writer and Virgil, a former priest, as they journey through Hell in pursuit of Dante’s wife Beatrice. Their descent through various circles of the underworld introduces them to tormented souls experiencing eternal suffering rooted in their personal fears and regrets. The narrative builds toward a final confrontation with the Devil himself, while the pair are hunted by horrific entities along the way.
Valladares has emphasized the film’s ambitious approach to depicting infernal torment, comparing its visual intensity to landmark horror works like “Hellraiser” and “Frontier(s).” Despite its graphic elements, the director notes the story fundamentally explores human emotions including grief, guilt, and the lengths one will pursue love when facing desperation. The cast includes Christopher Rygh from “Vikings: Valhalla,” alongside Matthew Metcalfe, Tilda Metsola, and Fadhillah Othman.
Before beginning principal photography, Valladares will premiere “Invoking Scream,” his sequel to “Invoking Yell,” at London’s FrightFest festival on August 28.
