Romania has officially selected “Fjord,” directed by Cristian Mungiu, as its entry for the best international feature film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The selection committee made its decision unanimously, choosing a film that has already garnered significant recognition on the festival circuit.
The drama, which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, achieved remarkable success there, taking home the prestigious Palme d’Or alongside additional awards including the FIPRESCI Prize, Ecumenical Jury Prize, Prix de la Citoyenneté, and François Chalais Prize. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve and is a multinational co-production involving Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
Following its August release in France, “Fjord” is scheduled to arrive in Romanian theaters during the winter season. The Academy will announce its shortlist for the international feature category on December 15, with final nominations revealed on January 21, ahead of the 99th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 14.
The film qualifies under a recently amended Academy rule that allows non-English language films winning best film at major festivals to be submitted directly for consideration, regardless of official country selection.
